Taxpayers who fund federal, state and municipal money paid to procure goods and services deserve accountability. It is reasonable to expect private businesses to fulfill their contractual obligations in good faith.

For the vast majority, they are.

But, don’t be fooled.

Wherever government money can be found, the potential for abuse exists.

These government programs and the monies they allocate inevitably attract fraudsters. Enormous budgets allocated to government procurement through the private sector create a staggering potential for abuse. Fighting this corruption, whistleblowers using the false claims act continue to help expose the persons and companies working to defraud these programs.

The following sectors have been highlighted because of the public-to-private programs and the high risk for their being defrauded.

The Big Spenders

Healthcare

Includes government programs such as Medicare, Medicaid and Tricare. Hospitals, hospices, home care and emergency services can potentially cheat these programs through false claims and other tactics. The pharmaceutical industry and pharmacies have been the targets of notable cases of misconduct. New technologies including telemedicine and telehealth have led to new ways to illegally manipulate reimbursements.

Defense

In the United States, military spending is vast and huge sums make their way to procurement and contracts to private vendors. Parts and technology used in the vehicles, aircraft and equipment are often supplied by private companies in the defense industry. Additionally, a wide variety of goods, materials and services for our troops are procured from private vendors. Bullet proof vests, boots, uniforms, weapons - the list is long.

Education

Public universities are, of course, often recipients of state and federal funding for various programs. In addition, a public or private university may be awarded federally funded grant money for research. Public schools have a variety of funding needs from procuring cafeteria food, supplies etc. Charter schools, while acting independently of the state's public school system, are commonly awarded funding based on enrollment.

Energy

The Energy department has a number of programs used to promote United States security and energy needs. The nuclear energy industry, oil & gas, as well as green energy sector are regularly encouraged through grants programs. Research grants and incentives are used to promote American energy interests and infrastructure.

Other Important Sectors

The wheels of government require funding to operate, and funding is the lifeblood of government agencies and state capitals across the country. These agencies often seek partnerships with the private sector for supplies, services and other needs.

Transportation

The maintenance and construction of the United States infrastructure is often funded by federal or state money. Highways, roads, airports, seaports, and rail systems typically involve government money in some form or another. Grants for construction, development and repairs are often provided by private companies contractually obligated to make it happen.

Prisons & Justice

The administration fo justice in the country is big business. From federal private prison contracts, to the various goods and services required to keep the industry running, government dollars are making it happen.
