The Physical Evidence: Skid Marks, Crush Depth, and Final Rest Positions
A crash writes its own account of itself, in a language reconstructionists read fluently.
Tire marks show where braking started, where a trailer began to swing, and where a vehicle left its lane. Gouges and scrapes in the pavement mark the points of impact. The depth and direction of crush in each vehicle records the force and angle of the collision, and where the vehicles finally came to rest constrains every version of events that could be true. From those inputs, momentum and energy analysis produces the numbers a courtroom needs: how fast each vehicle was moving, where each one was positioned, and what the drivers could see and when.
Modern practice captures all of it in exhaustive detail. Laser scanners and drone photogrammetry map a scene down to centimeters, preserving a digital copy of the roadway that can be revisited long after traffic and weather have scrubbed the original.
Marrying the Physics to the Data: ECM Downloads, Cameras, and Logs
What separates a truck reconstruction from a car reconstruction is the quantity of machine testimony available.
The tractor's engine control module records speed, throttle, and brake application in the window around a triggering event, and event data recorders capture crash snapshots in vehicles equipped with them.[1] Dashcam footage, where a fleet runs cameras, shows the event itself. The driver's electronic logging data supplies the hours behind the wheel, which turns a physics finding into a fatigue explanation. A reconstruction that also accounts for perception and reaction time can then answer the decisive question: was there a moment when a professional driver, paying professional attention, could have prevented this?
The physics and the data discipline each other. An ECM download that contradicts the skid analysis sends both back for another look; when they agree, the conclusion is hard to argue with. When Reconstruction Decides the Case: Disputed Fault and Fatal Wrecks
Not every crash needs an expert. Two categories almost always do.
The first is the disputed-fault case, where the trucker's account, the insurer's fault percentage, and the police narrative all lean against you. A police report is written in hours; a reconstruction is built over weeks with tools an officer at a scene does not have, and civil fault is decided by evidence rather than by citations. The second is the fatal or catastrophic wreck, where the person with the most truthful account cannot give it. In those cases the reconstruction speaks for someone who cannot, and the measured sequence of events becomes the family's answer to a story only one side survived to tell.

The Scene Is Evidence, and Weather Erases It
Everything a reconstruction depends on decays. Tire marks fade with traffic and disappear with rain. Debris fields get swept within hours. The vehicles, the most important artifacts of all, get repaired, salvaged, or scrapped, and the electronic data inside them can be overwritten by ordinary use. The defense knows this; its rapid-response team is often photographing the scene before the road reopens.
Matching that speed is the point of an early evidence preservation demand and an early expert retention. A reconstructionist hired in week one works from the actual scene and the actual vehicles. One hired in month eight works from photographs of whatever someone else chose to document. Both can testify. Only one of them saw the proof.
