Developed by Organon, a Dutch pharmaceutical company, the problems with NuvaRing birth control have been numerous since its release, leading to a number of legal complaints. The company was approved to sell the vaginal contraceptive in the U.S. by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on October 3, 2001 and was actively marketing and distributing the drug by early 2002. It is estimated that by 2007 there were over 1.5 million female users.
NuvaRing injury attorneys began investigating side effects following a growing number of patient complication reports raising awareness of possible concerns.
In 2007, Organon was purchased by Schering-Plough and just two years later Schering-Plough merged with the pharmaceutical company Merck. Compensation for the injuries you experienced may be available through a NuvaRing lawsuit over the company's failure to warn about the possible risks to your health.
If you or your family were affected by blood clot side effects or other health problems, share what happened with our NuvaRing lawyer to learn your legal options.
To date, the contraceptive has been implicated in studies to cause heart and blood related side-effects that can potentially be life threatening. Cardiovascular problems, heart attacks, pulmonary embolisms and strokes are just a few of the life-threatening complications being investigated by our personal injury attorneys.
These side-effects are caused by the impact of the hormones released into patients’ bodies and can be exacerbated by existing heart problems and by cigarette smoking. A Nuva Ring lawsuit won't be able to undo the injuries you suffered, but may be able to recover compensation over what you experienced.
The list of potentially lethal side-effects associated with the use of the contraceptive includes the following:
- blood clots
- myocardial infarction
- pulmonary embolism (PE)
- deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- heart attack
- heart arrhythmia (unusual heart rhythm)
- gallbladder disease which requires surgery and/or gallbladder removal

Despite the adverse effects being reported and the research supporting those effects, there hasn't been a NuvaRing recall at the time of this writing.
This does not mean that individual lawsuits cannot be filed; however, as a recall is not a condition of filing a lawsuit if you have been injured as a result of using a defective product or bad drug. Your NuvaRing lawyer may be able to file an individual suit over your injuries. As of the beginning of 2013 there have been roughly 1000 such lawsuits filed, and the number is increasing each month.
NuvaRing litigation goes back to 2008, when the first legal action was filed.
The initial lawsuit was dismissed by the courts in 2009, but subsequent suits have been brought forward and have been consolidated into a Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) against the drugmaker.
In addition to the federal level class action, there are state level court cases pending as well, the most high profile of which is a case in the California State courts, in which the NuvaRing attorneys filed on behalf of the plaintiffs to not be included in the MDL.
The reasoning behind this is the inclusion of McKesson, the distributor, as a defendant in the case arguing on the grounds that they were aware of the risks associated with the use of the contraceptive and failed to warn consumers.
Successful litigation may result in significant compensation being paid to settle pending plaintiffs' claims over nuvaring injuries. The birth control device is a flexible ring composed of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer that is physically inserted into the vagina as a contraceptive.
It releases a low dose of estrogen and progestin that work to suppress ovulation. In addition, it also acts to thicken cervical mucus and prevent sperm from reaching an egg if one is released. The personal injury law firm investigations are focus on the potentially dangerous side effects of the drugs released by the device.
It is designed to release 0.015 mg/day of estrogen in the form of ethinyl estradiol (EE) and 0.120 mg/day of etonogestral -- intended to modify female hormones in order to prevent pregnancy.
The birth control ring is only worn for three weeks out of the month. It is removed during the fourth week and the woman has a normal menstrual period.
A new ring is then inserted and the cycle begins again.
The ring is held in place by the vaginal muscles and cases of the device being expelled are rare. As opposed to pending Mirena IUD litigation, the adverse effects center around the drugs effects rather than a migration of the device. The health problems are believed to be related to how a woman's body deals with the etonogestral. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and blood clot side effects are just a few of the reported complaints.
You deserve a compassionate injury lawyer, who understands the impact your suffering has had on you and your family. Your need a legal advocate who cares about your recovery. On your side, accountable to you.
It metabolizes this progestin into desogestral, which has been shown by two different studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine to increase the risk of blood clots by 1.5 to 2.4 times versus older oral contraceptives.
The British Medical Journal has also published research done through analysis of Danish medical data on women who used non-oral contraceptives such as NuvaRing®.
The analysis covered 626,158 women between the ages of 15 and 49 without any history of heart disease or cancer. The researchers found that vaginal contraceptive rings increased the risk of thrombosis by 6.5 times in comparison with women who did not use the device.
