    Lawsuit Claims Against Pfizer

In 1998, a little blue pill emerged in the United States market promising to cure male impotence. Viagra, Pfizer's golden child, changed the sexual landscape. No longer was erectile dysfunction a shameful condition to keep hidden. Men around the globe touted its effectiveness and gave testimonies of how that little blue pill changed their lives.

Now, nearly two decades later, serious health risks are surfacing, some of which are potentially life threatening. One of these conditions is the focus of several major lawsuits - melanoma caused by Viagra.

    The Viagra Melanoma Study...

A study published in the June 2014 issue of (JAMA) Internal Medicine, a highly respected medical journal, researchers at the Harvard Medical School found that men who take Viagra experience an elevated risk of developing melanoma. This increase is speculated to be as much as 84 percent.

The study analyzed data collected on 25,848 men and the results were released in April 2014. The study showed an apparent correlation between the active ingredient in Viagra, sildenafil citrate, and a decrease in PDE5A, a protein that fights cancer.

The lower levels of this protein have the potential to increase melanoma cancer cells. According to the American Cancer Society, melanoma is responsible for approximately 8,650 deaths each year.

    Associated Risks...

As news of this study began to circulate and gain exposure, lawsuits have begun to surface. The primary assertion is that Pfizer failed to inform patients who were taking Viagra and provide warnings about the potential cancer risks associated with taking the drug.

Many men who have taken the drug and now have melanoma allege that they would have caught the cancer at earlier stages or avoided the drug completely had they been better informed. They claim that if they had been provided material that explained this possible side effect as well as information on monitoring for symptoms and signs of melanoma, they would have been able to treat it more effectively.

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer, often presenting at first as a mole that may have an odd shape or uneven border. If it is not identified and treated early, it can spread to the lymph nodes. At that point, the survival prospect of the patient is significantly decreased.

    Are The Lawsuit Claims Valid?

Men who claim that the company did not do its due diligence to ensure that their product had been properly tested are filing the Viagra lawsuit against Pfizer. It is the company's responsibility to research and study a drug before releasing it to the public.

It is alleged that Pfizer either failed to do this altogether or ignored the potential health risks that the drug causes.

Any company that has a product that could potentially cause harm has an obligation to the public to place warnings on the packaging and provide literature to the customers so that they can make informed choices regarding their health care decisions.

The other portion of the lawsuit addresses the absence of literature or warning labels regarding this potentially life-threatening condition.

These men claim that had they been made aware of the possibility that they could develop cancer after taking Viagra, that they would have made different choices. Some say they would have never taken the drug while others assert that they would have been able to catch the cancer in its early stages and possibly eradicated it.

Although this study did have solid and sobering results, it is not certain whether it is enough to create a strong causal connection between melanoma and Viagra. The study was somewhat limited in scope and nature, leaving many to speculate that further testing will be necessary.

The researchers who conducted the study indicated a need for more research in this area. In many cases, one study is rarely able to stand alone and set a precedent for lawsuits or other activity.

In the study, approximately 142 men who had been Viagra users had a diagnosis of melanoma. This led to the conclusion that Viagra use increased a person's risk for melanoma.

However, because it is only one study, it may not hold up well. Typically, there must be several studies over time to validate the claims made by the first.

    Lawsuit Eligibility Requirements...

While litigation against Pfizer has been set in motion in some cases, attorneys seeking a Viagra melanoma lawsuit are interviewing men who meet these specific criteria:

    • They have received a melanoma diagnosis from their doctor
    • They had recently used Viagra prior to receiving the diagnosis

Men who file lawsuits against Pfizer may be eligible to seek compensation for lost wages, past medical bills, future medical bills, pain and suffering and other losses or damages that have resulted from the condition.

If a patient is interested in pursuing a lawsuit against Pfizer, they should contact their attorney for more information.

    Melanoma can be fatal.

It is advised that any man who has taken Viagra should go to his doctor and get a screening for melanoma. Many times, it is barely noticed in the beginning because the symptoms are so subtle. By becoming aware of the potential risks, men can take proactive measures and head off the condition or at least address it as quickly as possible.

This type of cancer can be very serious, even life threatening, so it is vital to get checked out.
