Pradaxa (dabigatran), like other anti-coagulants, works to prevent the body from forming blood clots – a behavior which can increase the risk of internal bleeding. Originally, the medication is used to prevent strokes in atrial fibrillation patients, and to prevent venous thromboembolism (most commonly deep vein thrombosis) following hip or knee replacement surgery.
However, a growing number of lawsuits claim the blood thinner Pradaxa is different from other anticoagulants because it increases the risks of severe uncontrollable internal bleeding and because it does not have an antidote. Additionally, a recent Danish study published in the British Medical Journal has raised concerns patients may not be using the medication properly (BMJ).
Other anticoagulant drugs can be countered by administering a dose of Vitamin K to reverse the drug’s effects and stop the patient’s bleeding. This is also the primary claim in pending Xarelto lawsuits over uncontrolled bleeding. This is not the case with Pradaxa users who begin to hemorrhage internally.
The litigation argued on this lack of an effective antidote for Pradaxa-caused internal bleeding.
Additionally, it is alleged doctors and healthcare practitioners were not informed about the lack of an antidote for the medication, leaving them without an effective means to treat and stabilize you if you began to bleed uncontrollably.
In May 2014, the manufacturer Boehringer Ingelheim settled more than 4,000 lawsuits in an MDL for $650 million.
The current cases being litigated involve similar claims of the following internal hemorrhaging:
Gastrointestinal Bleeding – One of the initial lawsuits was filed by the daughter of a woman who is alleged to have died as a result of GI bleeding associated with the use of Pradaxa. Other cases have been filed where GI bleeding occurred and plaintiffs are claiming that the drug's manufacturer did not provide sufficient warnings regarding the potential for internal bleeding. Additional claims allege the manufacturer did not provide guidance in regard to how the bleeds should be treated.
Brain Hemorrhages – Another claim filed alleges that the mother of two daughters fell and hit her head and that this fall caused internal bleeding which could not be stopped by doctors. The woman died within 24 hours from the injury.
Rectal Bleeding – A further claim was filed by a patient who suffered severe rectal bleeding. The plaintiff alleges that despite the discontinuation of Pradaxa, the bleeding could not be stopped until doctors cauterized the internal wound.
Other less serious side effects that have been reported related to the use of Pradaxa including:
- Abdominal discomfort and pain
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Gastrointestinal ulcers
There were 542 deaths submitted to the FDA last year alone in which Pradaxa was mentioned as possibly related.
Many of these deaths have been related to injuries caused by falls and other minor trauma, especially in the elderly. The Pradaxa attorneys filed over 4,000 suits which were consolidated into the MDL, some on behalf of surviving family members who died.
Because the elderly are more likely to have balance problems and have more fragile blood vessels, they are at the highest risk of suffering severe internal injuries after a minor fall or trauma - damage that may be compounded by unstoppable bleeding related to using Pradaxa.

There are currently over 100 plaintiffs suing in the courts and we are expecting hundreds more patients to come forward with claims in the coming months. An initial hearing was conducted on Oct. 3, 2012, to determine a management plan for handling the lawsuits.
At that time all the pending lawsuits were consolidated under one judge in a single court through multi-district litigation - MDL 2385 Pradaxa (Dabigatran Etexilate) Product Liability Litigation.
The appointed judge, the Honorable David R. Herndon, has established dates for five bellwether trials which will determine how future lawsuits might be resolved.
If the bellwether trials are in favor of the plaintiffs, it is likely that the defendant will offer settlements for the remaining lawsuits.
The bellwether trials for the Pradaxa lawsuits will be held:
Aug. 11, 2014
Sept. 22, 2014
Nov. 3, 2014
Jan. 5, 2015
Feb. 16, 2015
